Guyanese sprinters chase Rio marks at Saturday’s Aliann Pompey Invitational

Guyanese male sprinters are eagerly awaiting Saturday’s Aliann Pompey Invitational Meeting.

Olympians, Jeremy Bascom and Adam Harris, have represented Guyana for many years, but have never run here before.

“I am very, very happy and excited because this is my first time running on Guyanese soil,” declared Bascom, who ran the 100m at the London 2012 Olympics and whose personal best is 10.16.

“I am so happy that I am able to run here before I retire and to do so before my home crowd and family,” he added.

Continuing with his talk at the press conference hed at Ramada Princess Hotel, he said, “I am extra motivated to be running in Guyana because the fans are very critical, so you have to be ready to run fast.

Harris, who represented Guyana at the 2008 Olympics in the 200m, said he wants for his first race in Guyana to be special.

“We are going to put on a good show at this meet, get some fast times, and hopefully some qualifying times for Rio,” Harris, the national 100m and 200m records holder at 10.12 and 20.99, respectively, said.

Bascom, during the press conference was asked if he can make the qualifying mark of 10.16 for Rio. “I am here for that reason, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could make it,” he responded.

Winston George, Guyana’s 400m record holder at 45.25, is also “looking for a good race.” He will run both the 200m and 400m. “I ran with Adam before in the 200m and he beat me, but I am eagerly looking forward to race Jeremy Bascom, this is long overdue race,” he said.

George, who represented his country in the 400m at the London 2012 Olympics, informed, “running at home gives me that big motivation to do my best.”
