Asaba, Nigeria - Two API alum copped three medals at the recently completed African Championships in Nigeria. Zaza Wellington of Liberia and Chidi Okezie of Nigeria copped a total of three bronze medals for their respective countries.
Zaza Wellington cruised through the rounds and made the finals easily. He finished 3rd in the finals with a run of 13.88. The winner, Antonio Alkana hails from South Africa (13.51) while Oyeniyi Abejoye of Nigeria was 2nd with a time of 13.87. Wellington ran a wind-legal PB at the 3rd edition of the Aliann Pompey Invitational on June 30th. His run was good for 2nd place behind US Virgin Islander - Eddie Lovett.
Consistency is key for Chidi Okezie. His run of 45.65 was good for third at the championships, where he finished behind Baboloki Thebe of Botswana (44.81) and South Africa’s Phora Thapelo (45.14). Ozekie picked up another bronze as Nigeria finished 3rd int he Men's 4x400m relay. Okezie was 2nd at this year's API behind Greneda's Kirani James and ahead of Guyana's Winston George.
Competition Founder and Organizer, Guyana's four-time Olympian and World Championship finalist Aliann Pompey had this to say: "I think it's a testament to the quality of the meet that we're able to attract athletes who do so well on the world stage. Each year keeps getting bigger and better. I'm extremely excited for next year!"
